The harder way, would involve pulling both axleshafts, the driveshaft, and then the differential, because the "cover" is your axle beam. The Ford Ranger 4x4 received a new SLA (Short arm Long Arm) suspension in 1998, and used that suspension until its production end in 2011. Unlike the reverse rotation Dana 35 used from 1990-1997, the Dana 35 SLA is a standard rotation axle. This means that the gears from a 1990-1997 Dana 35 will not work in a 1998-2011 Ford Ranger.Valvoline, Castrol, NAPA, etc. GL-5 gear lubes are all fine, there's not a gear lube sold at NAPA I wouldn't run. Oct 12, 2017 · Ever since changing the gear ratio on my Dana 44 rear diff a couple of years ago from 3.55 to 4.10, the gears whine when going around 35-55 MPH with just enough throttle to maintain that speed. Not a loud whine, just enough to be annoying. When accelerating or decelerating in this range the whine disappears. At speeds above or below 35-55 there ... As others suggested, 2 quarts butnyoull use only around 1.3 quarts. I suggest jacking the axle up to get more fluid in there. At ground, the hole will be lower and less fluid.
