One forum quoted that GM moved date codes to the side of the block in the 70's. This is passenger side between the core plugs. Block code (in the usual place) confirmed as 3970010 "M" code next to this. ... It definately has the 3970010 code at the back of the block on the drivers side. '72 sounds much better than '80! I am trying to figure out any other information about this block, what year, what it came from, etc. I have not dropped the pan yet, so I do not know if it has 2 or 4 bolt mains. I have found Four numbers. 3970010 along with "hecho en mexico" on the back drivers side. 254 on the back passenger side. 010 on the drivers side in front of the oil filter. and the engine code is "MK01800."The heads will work on the block - They are the swirl chamber heads mostly used on Chevy and GMC Truck T.B.I. 350 c.i. - center bolt valve covers (1987-95) - If you are looking for any kind of performance out of your motor, you may want to use a different head - the swirl port was not the best design for performance - they were used mostly for low end torque which is why the vast majority came ...Second cylinder block photo This photo is also of a 3970010 block, cast in 1969, that does NOT have the 010/020 cast under the timing chain cover.
