General Description. The Green Swamp is a critical hydrological resource. It encompasses the headwaters of four major rivers – the Withlacoochee, Ocklawaha, Hillsborough and Peace rivers – and has the highest groundwater elevation in Florida’s Peninsula. It is therefore critical to the recharge of the Floridan Aquifer. Isham Stewart (born in 1860) and Sarah Stewart (born in 1845) were murdered there on or about May 9, 1918.
