not really. You can defeat it with other weapons too, but you should really get those that have the highest amount of armor penetration you can get your hands on. They will make things easier and keep your losses lower. Ether Drake is all armor and hull and I think he's regenerating, so you'll want armor penetration.The Drake has high armor and no shields. I was able to kill it with a 20k fleet of corvettes and plasma cruisers only. Just have enough corvettes to use as cannon fodder and the cruisers will nuke the drake easily. Generally 30-35k is enough, but if you want to stay on the safe side 50k is definitely more than enough.

My most recent play, it took about 65 years to get the tech to beat the dragon reliably while not losing the game in the meantime. Then I used that dragon to kill shard and got 200k fleet power of dragons and steamrolled my regional adversaries.Whatever strength you killed it at in Ensign difficulty will probably be sufficient. I’d recommend 40k-50k just to guarantee it, and make sure to fit your ships to counter Shard. As for difficulty affecting guardians, it does.
