The penetrator doesn't make a good SD round because it does penetrate through 25 - sometimes over 32 inches in ballistic gelatin. The extreme Defender is lighter, 65 grains and the flutes are sharper and it dumps its energy and 15 to 16 inches.The penetrator is more of a hunting round and it seems to panetrate up to 20in in gel in .380, more in larger calibers. Underwood loads their ammo a little hotter than Lehigh. Underwood says the Defender in .380 penetrates 15in in gel. I would get that for self defense because it penetrates withing the FBI recommended 12-18in in ballistics gel.
